Senior Project Director, MAPS, and Senior Health Advisor, Center for Private Sector Health Initiatives (CPSHI)

Dr. Halima A. Mwenesi is the Senior Project Director for the multi-million dollar US Government flagship Malaria Action Program for States (MAPS) project in Nigeria.  Based at FHI 360’s Washington D.C. headquarters, Dr. Mwenesi also serves as a Senior Health Advisor to the Center and GHPN.  Prior to this, Dr. Mwenesi led a global initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to mitigate direct and indirect effects of taxes, tariffs, and non-tariff barriers on access to anti-malarial commodities through evidence-based and targeted advocacy. In this effort, she managed a team of diverse partners and created new partnerships and collaborations with non-traditional partners for AED (now FHI 360) including the World Customs Organization, the European Union, and the International Trade Center/World Trade Organization. During her 12 year tenure at AED, Dr. Mwenesi has focused mainly on technical, communication, and strategic policy issues related to the scaling-up of effective interventions for malaria. She served as AED’s Director of Public Health Policy Initiatives and Senior Malaria Advisor, and has worked as the Africa Region Technical Manager for the NetMark project. She has provided leadership, technical expertise on malaria, and oversight in the areas of research, policy advocacy and collaboration with external partners such as the World Health Organization, NGOs and other organizations involved in malaria control in Africa and Asia. Trained in grant writing and proposal development, Dr. Mwenesi also contributes directly to strategic planning and new business development. Prior to joining FHI 360/AED, Dr. Mwenesi worked for the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for fifteen years and also worked for the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) at the World Health Organization (WHO) for three years.  She is the current Chair of the Northern Non-governmental Organization (NGOs) Constituency to the Board of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership and is a focal person for technical assistance to country recipients of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. In addition, Dr. Mwenesi sits on numerous advisory boards and scientific committees that address malaria and other communicable diseases, and is the former Chairperson of the Multi-Lateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) and the Task Force on Research Capacity Strengthening.  She holds a BA and MA from the University of Nairobi, and a Ph.D. in Public Health and Policy from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.
